What was the first movie you ever saw about space travel? If you were lucky, perhaps you got to see the original Star Wars on the big screen back in 1977. Maybe it was Solaris in 1972. Perhaps it was Alien in 1979. Or if you were an 80s kid, it may have been The Last Starfighter, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, or Dune. Either way, there’s something that’s so absolutely enthralling about space as a kid.
Chances are that you wanted to actually visit the worlds that were depicted on screen. After all, who sees Luke Skywalker in his X-34 Landspeeder on his home planet of Tatooine and doesn’t immediately want to go there?
But what makes space such an appealing thing to us?
Well, to put it simply (as Douglas Adams did so eloquently in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), “Space is big. Really big.” Or, as William Shatner informed us every week during the original run of Star Trek, “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”
There’s something about the unknown that causes us to want to explore and learn, just like the crew of the Enterprise wanted to. For generations, men and women have been compelled to adventure out and get away from home in order to see what else is out there. It’s truly a wonderful thing.
