Here at TSTI, we’re big fans of any movies that get people interested in actually understanding space. Are they often farfetched? Yes, absolutely they are. Could the people in these movies have benefited from better aerospace training coaches before they were launched into space? Most definitely! But they also open up our minds to an interest in what’s actually going on in our universe. Here are three of our favorite movies about space:
- Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is an absolute classic. Nominated for four Academy Awards in 1968, it is often regarded as being one of the best films of all time. With an interesting plot and jaw dropping outer space visuals, it’s one of the best of its kind.
- Although a good chunk of the movie isn’t grounded in actual science, it’s hard to dislike Ridley Scott’s Alien. Shot using miniature models of the spacecraft and planets, it is known for its imaginative depiction of alien planets.
- It would be hard to mention movies about space and not mention 1977’s Star Wars. Upon its release, it became an instant hit. Since its release, there have been a number of spinoffs, prequels, and sequels.
