The atmosphere forms a thin layer around the Earth. The density of the atmosphere decreases as we go higher,however, the atmosphere can affect a spacecraft in low orbit (600 km or 365 mi altitude) through drag, andatomic oxygen which degrades spacecraft surfaces.
